How will I learn Tai Chi Fit®?

Initially everyone who wants to do Tai Chi Fit® must start with the 6 week Introduction to Tai Chi Fit® course either in a group setting or on a 121 basis.

Thereafter you are free to practice Tai Chi Fit® in the comfort of your own home or attend ‘pay & practice’ session with others. Pay & practice 121 sessions can also be arranged.

The same process will apply if you wish to progress to one of the higher levels of Tai Chi Fit® .

What shall I wear for class?

You'll just need some loose comfortable clothes. Any clothing in which you can move freely is suitable e.g. tracksuit bottoms and T-shirts. All our classes are done barefooted.

How long do the lessons last?

All classes are 60 minutes long.

Why is Tai Chi Fit® usually practised in bare feet?

By practicing barefoot you become more connected with the earth as the synthetic materials used to make the soles of shoes isolate you from it.

If Tai Chi Fit® is practiced indoors in a studio or dojo it is also best to practice barefoot so as not to bring the outside inside.

What is Tai Chi Fit®used for?

People may use Tai Chi Fit® to improve posture, balance, coordination, endurance and flexibility and to maintain good health and quality of life.

The American Journal of Medicine and Sports, Vol. III, Number II, March/April 2001) lists a series of studies showing that tai chi can improve concentration, focus, performance, physical and emotional balance, can reduce blood pressure, anxiety and depression, can improve reactions to stressful situations and can improve our overall health by enhancing our immune system.

Do you have to be fit to start doing Tai Chi Fit®?
No - Do however check with your doctor if you are in any doubt before starting any program of physical exercise. Also let your instructor know of any disability you may have that may restrict your ability to perform certain movements.

Are classes suitable for men and women?
Yes absolutely!

How safe is Tai Chi Fit® for my child?

You can never be too young to learn or do Tai Chi Fit®.

Recent studies have shown remarkable results of tai chi practice:
A study at the University of Miami, Touch Research Institute showed that adolescents with ADHD showed improved behaviour, less daydreaming and hyperactivity after 10 sessions. (Hernandez-Reif, M., Field, T., & Thimas, E. (2001). Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: benefits from Tai Chi. Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies, 5, 120-123).

Studies have also shown a relationship between physical activity and the development of self-esteem, particularly with adolescents and children with special needs. (Gruber, J.J. (1986) American Academy of Physical Education papers. Vol. 19, pp 30-48).

A series of studies have shown how Tai Chi helps students who exhibit violence or aggressive behaviour. It was found to be particularly effective with children between the ages of 10 and 14. (2002 Adolescence. Vol. 36, Issue 143) (Adolescence. Volume 33, Issue 1) (Human Relations, Volume 39, Issue 12).

What is the difference between Tai Chi Fit® and Powerchi YOGA®?

Tai Chi Fit® is a dynamic yet gentle exercise routine based on the ancient art of Tai Chi.

Powerchi YOGA® on the other hand is al flowing combination of Yoga and Tai Chi which is more demanding on the body’s ability to move through larger more physical body movements.
